Wednesday's KNVB Beker encounter between Ajax and AZ has been suspended after the
visiting team walked off the pitch following a red card for goalkeeper Esteban
Alvarado after he kicked a supporter who invaded the pitch.
An Ajax fan entered the pitch after 38 minutes of play and ran towards the AZ
goalkeeper attempting to land a kick towards the face of the Costa Rican - who
proceeded to kick the fan to the ground before again kicking him while he was on
the ground.
Onrushing stewards then intervened and took the Ajax supporter away but referee Bas
Nijhuis consequently showed the AZ keeper a straight red card for misconduct, much
to the dismay of coach Gertjan Verbeek.
Verbeek then entered the pitch and ordered his players to leave the field of play
and head for the dressing rooms.
Representatives of both sides and match officials have decided to cancel the game,
and it is yet unclear what the consequences will be for AZ or whether the fixture
will be rescheduled for a further date.
