UEFA fined 12,700 pounds to Celtic

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 5:30 AM

Celtic have been fined 12,700 pounds by UEFA after the club's supporters engaged in 'illicit chanting' during a 3-1 win over Rennes.

The Scottish Premier League club were charged following a complaint to the UEFA match delegate from the Strathclyde Police match commander.

A section of the Celtic support reportedly engaged in pro-IRA chanting during the Europa League match at Celtic Park on November 3.

Celtic escaped punishment from the SPL over a similar incident during a home match against Hibernian on October 29.

On that occasion, Scottish football authorities ruled the club were taking all possible action to cut out any 'unacceptable conduct'.

However, UEFA have proven to be less lenient.

European football's governing body has also fined Glasgow Rangers on no fewer than three occasions in the past over similar incidents.
